Consultation with the recreation fishing sector is an important part of AFMA’s Commonwealth fisheries management and we recently hosted the sixth Recreational Fishers Forum at our offices in Canberra.
The twice yearly forums are designed to give recreational fishers insight into how AFMA manages Commonwealth fisheries and provides an additional opportunity for recreational fishers to have their say on issues of concern or interest. The event was attended by a wide variety of fishers from the fishing tackle industry, game and sports fishing groups, peak state bodies and amateur fishing associations.
AFMA’s CEO Dr James Findlay, chaired the forum and said that the day was a success, thanking all those who attended.
“Our recreational fishing forums are a vital part of helping AFMA understand the concerns of recreational fishers.
“We recognise that our fisheries are a shared resource, so it important to have mechanisms, like this forum, for the views of recreational fishers to be heard.
“I realise that many who came have ‘day’ jobs, so I thank you for taking the time to attend the forum.”
AFMA and the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation (ARFF) have also recently agreed to continue the role of the ARFF Liaison Officer, following a successful first year. Based at ARFF’s headquarters, Phil Ravanello is the new Liaison Officer. He’s helping to ensure that the views and concerns of recreational fishers are considered by AFMA and to build the capacity of ARFF to engage in fisheries management, furthering the relationship between the two bodies.
Managing Director of ARFF, Mr Allan Hansard, welcomed AFMA’s decision for the Liaison Officer position to be continued.
“The Liaison Officer placement at ARFF has been of great benefit to us,” Mr Hansard said.
“It has given us an increased ability to talk constructively with AFMA and government about matters that are of high importance to our members.
“I look forward to working collaboratively with AFMA staff over the next 12 months to progress some of the important project work we are doing for the benefit of our members”
Phil Ravanello started in this position earlier this month – watch this space for a profile of him to come!
