3 March 2016

AFMA is reminding operators of their obligations and role in ensuring the effectiveness of e-monitoring systems and to stay in view this March.

Since August 2015, electronic monitoring (e-monitoring) has been a compulsory requirement in the Gillnet, Hook and Trap (GHaT) and the Eastern and Western Tuna and Billfish Fisheries (ETBF & WTBF).

All operators are required to maintain their e-monitoring systems in good working order. This includes performing a standard function test when turning your system on at the beginning of a trip, when replacing the hard drives and ensuring that the system is properly shut down when you remove the hard drive.

AFMA collects data from all fishing trips so operators must ensure their e-monitoring system is fully functional at all times. Operators must also keep camera lenses clean and regularly check the cameras’ views of the catch handling and gear deployment areas to ensure they are unobstructed and the areas are well-lit at night.

AFMA’s Executive Manager of Fisheries, Dr Nick Rayns, explained that e-monitoring is beneficial for both AFMA and fishing operators.

“E-monitoring enables AFMA to cost effectively verify fishery operators’ logbooks,” Dr Rayns said.

“This provides AFMA with accurate and up-to-date information about target species catches and protected species interactions.

“Information about protected species interactions is reported quarterly and helps ensure that the Commonwealth fishing industry is accountable to the Australian community.”

Operators must also remember to return their e-monitoring hard drive to AFMA on the first landing of every month along with completed logbook pages. Operators are also reminded that they must replace the hard drive even when it is not full and must always keep a spare hard drive on the boat.

If you experience any technical issues with your system or require replacement hard drives, please phone Archipelago Asia Pacific on 02 6162 1192 or email to info@archipelago-ap.com.au
