Today is Sustainable Seafood Day and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is encouraging all Australians to celebrate our commercial fishing industry.

Whether you enjoy flathead, pink ling, banana prawns, scallops or one of the tunas (to name just a few!), there has never been a better time to enjoy seafood from a Commonwealth managed fishery.

AFMA’s acting CEO, Dr Nick Rayns said that Australians can be confident that seafood caught from a Commonwealth managed fishery is sustainable and well-managed.

“Each year AFMA and the fishing industry conduct research to better understand current fish stock sizes, work out sustainable harvest levels and consider broader conditions in the marine environment,” Dr Rayns said.

“It is this research along with other fisheries information, including fishing log books, surveys and observer reports, that AFMA bases its management decisions on.

“So whether it’s baked eastern school whiting with fresh lemon, or pan-fried albacore tuna and roast vegetables, or perhaps marinated silver warehou with a watercress salad, you know that what you are eating comes from a sustainably managed fishery.

“With so many choices on offer from Commonwealth managed fisheries, seafood can be enjoyed not just today, but all year round.”
