Friday 11 March is Sustainable Seafood Day and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is encouraging all Australians to celebrate and support our commercial fishing industry by tucking into seafood from a Commonwealth managed fishery.

Whether it is hosting friends with a seafood spread at home, munching on some fresh prawns at a wharf or enjoying fish and chips on the beach, there has never been a better excuse to enjoy a feast of Australian seafood.

AFMA’s CEO Dr James Findlay said Australians have a lot to be proud of when it comes to our seafood industry and our fisheries management.

“Commonwealth fisheries are in great shape,” Dr Findlay said.

“In fact, the most recent ABARES fishery status reports showed that for the second year in a row, no solely Commonwealth managed fishery was subject to overfishing.

“A science based approach, combined with strict management, and precautionary catch limits help ensure our fisheries are sustainably managed so that future generations can also enjoy fresh, local seafood.

“Furthermore, when you buy seafood from a Commonwealth managed fishery, you are supporting a proud Australian industry. “
