6 December 2016

The Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery 2016-17 season commenced 1 December 2016, and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is reminding farm sector operators on their reporting requirements during the catching, towing and transferring operations.

In order to gain an average weight for farmed southern bluefin tuna (SBT), an AFMA Authorised Representative (AAR) will supervise the sampling of at least 100 live fish, weighing 10kg or greater, from each tow cage.

During the transfer of fish from one tow cage to another the AAR must be present and video recording of the SBT transfer must take place. Operators need to ensure that sufficient equipment and personnel are provided to facilitate these requirements.

Please note: the use of bait to move fish from cage to cage is not permitted; except when authorised to do so by the AAR.

To ensure a successful 100 fish sample audit, operators are encouraged to read the sample process information available in the pre-season brief 2016-17.

AFMA also reminds operators to make sure all checklists are completed before you leave port and:

  • check that the catcher vessel is nominated
  • ensure your VMS is operating

Finally, remember to report correctly you must include any mortalities or protected species interactions.

If operators have any queries about their obligations please contact Adam Wade, National Compliance Planning and Operations or Anne Shepherd, Licensing and Data Services Manager on 02 6225 5555.
