The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) will be demonstrating Australia’s continued commitment to improving fisheries management at the 7th World Fisheries Congress in South Korea later this month.
Held from 23 – 27 May 2016 in Busan, the theme for this year is Challenge to Sustainable Fisheries and Safe Seafoods with sessions across a range of areas including aquaculture, climate change, fisheries biology and fishing gear technology.
AFMA’s Dan Corrie and Viki O’Brien are hosting and presenting at the session on Ecological Risk Assessment and Risk Management on the first day of the Congress. They will be joined by other Australian delegates as well as a diverse range of speakers from many countries such as Canada and Taiwan.
AFMA will present on:
Silver trevally
- the use of ecological risk assessment and management in Australian fisheries from south eastern Australia; and
- How AFMA is taking the next steps to further improve the sustainable use of Australian fisheries.
Australia is considered by some to be a world leader in sustainable fisheries management and in particular the use of risk-based management tools. These were developed with the scientific support of the CSIRO which enabled the fishery assessment process to be broadened from commercial species to all species caught.
The World Congress is a great opportunity to share Australia’s success in applying a risk-based frame work to more than 2,000 species our fisheries interact with that manages fishery risks to the marine environment, is affordable for government and industry and supported by fishery stakeholders.
AFMA’s presentations will include practical examples of how the risk assessment and risk management framework has been implemented in Australia, and how the framework might be applied to international fisheries.
