Understanding fishing rules and regulations for Commercial fishing operators in south-eastern Australia will be made easier with multiple management conditions streamlined for the 2016-17 season.
The direction, Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery and Small Pelagic Fishery (Closures) Direction 2016, comes into effect 1 May 2016 for operators in the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF), one of Australia’s largest fisheries and supplier of fresh Australian seafood.
The CEO of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), Dr James Findlay stated that the changes remove duplication and unnecessary regulations that currently exist for some commercial fishers.
“AFMA is committed to working with industry to making rules and regulations simpler, whilst still maintaining our strict management and ensuring sustainable fisheries,” Dr Findlay said.
“In consultation with representatives from industry, policy, conservation, state and territory governments, recreational and research fields, AFMA aims to not only remove unnecessary duplication of rules, but reopen areas for fishing, when research shows that it is okay for us to do so.
“This is great for the fishing industry and seafood lovers alike.
“The commercial fishing industry is a vital Australian industry supplying healthy seafood locally and overseas. AFMA will continue to work with industry, scientists, conservationists and recreational fishers to ensure our fisheries are well management and sustainable.”
