The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has released the report Net worth: Australia’s regional fisheries engagement.
The report includes an independent review of Australia’s regional fisheries engagement with the objective of:
Examining how and where fisheries fit in terms of Australian strategic policy and to make recommendations on how Australia can best leverage regional fisheries engagement to advance its broader foreign and security policy objectives in the Indo-Pacific region over the next ten to fifteen years.
Authored by Professor Marcus Haward and Dr Anthony Bergin, the report focuses on a concept that marine economic activity can be a driver of growth. Fisheries are significant renewable resources for Indian Ocean and Pacific Island countries and underpin food supplies and livelihoods. Driven by new technologies that make it economically viable to tap marine resources, the oceans will become an economic force this century, particularly in the search for food security and alternative sources of minerals and energy.
“The report highlights opportunities that will assist Australia’s engagement with regional fisheries management organisations and how these can contribute towards sustainable fisheries management and help economic growth,” Dr Bergin said.
The report can be found on ASPI’s website.
