The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) congratulates one of Australia’s largest fishing companies, Austral Fisheries, who today were awarded carbon neutral certification and in doing so, have become the first carbon neutral seafood operator in Australia.
Austral Fisheries has boats fishing from the Antarctic to the tropics, with operations in the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Fishery, in the Southern Ocean; and the Northern Prawn Fishery in Australia’s top end.
In congratulating Austral Fisheries, AFMA’s CEO Dr James Findlay said that it was great to see the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the environment.
“Austral Fisheries has worked hard over the years to ensure the sustainability of their operations,” Dr Findlay said.
“All of their fishing operations have been independently certified as being sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and going carbon neutral is yet another milestone for the company.
“Wild caught seafood has a low environmental impact when compared to other sources of animal protein source and Austral has just made it even less.
“Furthermore, AFMA’s strict management, with the support of operators like Austral Fisheries, is helping ensure that current and future generations can continue to enjoy the sustainable harvest from Commonwealth fisheries.
“It is fitting that Austral Fisheries has been recognised for its achievement today, Sustainable Seafood Day, and I congratulate the company.”
