With Australian tiger prawn catches from the Commonwealth Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) being the best in close to two decades, there has never been a better time to throw an Australian prawn on the barbie over the festive season.

Tiger prawn catches are up almost double from last season, which is great news for the industry and seafood lovers alike!

The CEO of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), Dr James Findlay said that you can’t go past prawns from the NPF not only for their taste, but their sustainability.

“With the warmer weather upon us, at your next family and friends BBQ or dinner, prawns from Australia’s Marine Stewardship Council certified NPF are the perfect choice,” Dr Findlay said.

“Good science, strict management and an ongoing commitment by industry to minimise bycatch, means that not only will your taste buds feel good, but so too will your conscience, confident in the knowledge that you are eating prawns from a well-managed Australian fishery.”

CEO of the NPF Industry P/L Annie Jarrett said that it had been a great season and as a result, Australians can look forward to an abundant supply of NPF prawns.

“The trawlers have now made their way safely home from the Gulf of Carpentaria and the top end after the best season in close to 20 years,” Ms Jarrett said.

“The quality and abundance of NPF prawns has been spectacular so expect a healthy supply in major supermarkets and retail outlets in the lead up to Christmas.

“So be it a prawn cocktail, prawns on a skewer, or simply a bucket of prawns by the beach, support our local industry by buying NPF prawns this summer.”
