With Easter now not far away, AFMA is encouraging people to hop into their local fish shop or supermarket and purchase Aussie seafood to enjoy this weekend.

“Easter is one of the busiest weekends for fishmongers and takeaway shops across Australia,” AFMA Chair, the Hon Norman Moore said.

“With our top-notch, sustainable Commonwealth fisheries, when you’re making your seafood choice, go Australian and be assured that it is coming from a fishery that is well-managed.”

Not only does seafood taste delicious but it is good for you as well. Gram for gram, fish is one of the lowest-fat, highest protein foods you can eat.  It is also a vital source of omega-3.

“At a time when chocolate consumption is at a maximum, a piece of grilled Aussie fish or prawns on the barbie make for a healthy addition to the Easter diet and is much better for the waistline!”

Australians have much to be proud of when it comes to our fisheries. We are internationally renowned for our sustainable fisheries and ourcatch limits are based on the best available science.

Australia was also the first country in the world to receive the independent certification of one its fisheries by the Marine Stewardship Council, a global organisation working to promote the best environmental choice in seafood. Many other Australian fisheries have followed suit.
