20 March 2015

The AFMA Commission held its first meeting of the year in Port Lincoln, South Australia on 25 to 26 February 2015. Senator Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture also attended the meeting.

Commission meetings are regularly held in major ports for Commonwealth fisheries to ensure good stakeholder engagement and hear issues first-hand. Of the five Commission meetings this year, only two will be held in Canberra.

While in Port Lincoln, Commissioners also met with the members of the southern bluefin tuna, shark, and trawl fisheries and went on an industry field trip to view tuna ranching operations.

A key outcome of the meeting was the increase to the sustainable catch limit for the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF) by 2000 tonnes.

The next Commission meeting will be held on 29 to 30 April 2015 in Canberra.
