There will soon be plenty of wild-caught, high quality scallops for Australians to enjoy.
Fishers are heading out to the waters of Bass Strait to begin harvesting this popular shellfish. The 2013 season started on 19 August.
AFMA CEO, Dr James Findlay, said that pre-season surveys undertaken by scientists and the fishing industry have shown that the scallops are in good condition.
“Fishers will be able to harvest the shellfish when they are in peak condition, which means that there will be some great locally-caught and sustainable product for consumers to enjoy”.
The Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery is managed under strict arrangements that ensure stocks are maintained at sustainable levels.
Fishers are looking forward to supplying this top quality Australian seafood to supermarkets and fish shops.
