Today we welcome the second of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) graduates on rotation with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), Tim Carew (read about the Katie Murphy who is also on rotation with AFMA).

Tim Carew is on rotation at AFMA

Tim has joined the Demersal and Midwater Fisheries Section of AFMA’s Fisheries Management Branch. Learn more about Tim below and why although he feels like he is still learning, he’s no small fry!

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I studied Marine Biology at Deakin University in Warrnambool, Victoria. I worked as an aquaculture technician in the six months between finishing my degree and moving to Canberra for the DAWR Graduate Development Programme. My first rotation was in the Marine Pest Unit in the Biosecurity Animal Division and now here I am, in the Demersal and Midwater Fisheries Section of the Fisheries Management Branch.

Why did you want to do a rotation at AFMA?

With a background in marine biology, fisheries management was always of interest to me so when I was presented with the opportunity to complete a rotation at AFMA I leapt at it. Learning about how Australia’s commercial fisheries are managed interested me greatly, particularly as I hope to continue in fisheries management into the future.

What has been your favourite part about working at AFMA so far?

AFMA has a great family vibe where everybody has welcomed me into their school. There is also the steep learning curve of trying to learn as much as possible about a fishery in the shortest amount of time so that you can be of value during the four month rotation, which is a nice challenge.

What is something people don’t know about AFMA that they should?

Everybody at AFMA seems to be able to balance the science and economic aspects of a fishery to ensure that they remain profitable but also sustainable. And hearing conversations between stakeholders and the fisheries managers, they are always trying to help and there seems to be a mutual respect between the two parties.

Welcome to the AFMA family Tim!
