We care about Australian fisheries and we want to make sure we are doing things right. How do we make sure? Well, with help from our 11 Resource Assessment Groups (RAGs) one for each major fishery group.
RAGs provide us with expert advice on fish stocks, target and non-target species as well as the broader impact of fishing on the marine environment.
We appoint a diverse group of scientists and other stakeholders to make sure we get the best advice. RAG membership consists of an independent Chair, AFMA staff, world-leading scientists, economists, members of the fishing industry, and members of the conservation and recreational fishing sectors, depending on the fishery. The term of appointment is typically three years.
Memberships to nine RAGs were recently renewed with the remaining two to be renewed in 2014.
