Tomorrow is Sustainable Seafood Day and to celebrate AFMA is encouraging all Australian’s to support our fishing industry by hooking into a meal of delicious, sustainably caught, healthy, local Aussie seafood.
Be it flake and chips, pan-seared tuna, or a fresh feed of prawns, the Chair of Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), the Hon Norman Moore, said by choosing seafood from a Commonwealth managed fishery, you are making a sustainable choice.
“Our fisheries management has come a long way in the last couple of decades,” said Mr Moore.
“AFMA takes a science-based, precautionary approach to fisheries management, and as a result Commonwealth fisheries are now internationally recognised as being some of the best managed in the world.
“The recent announcement of the once overfished orange roughy now being at a level where it can be sustainably fished is testament to just how far we have come.
“Moreover, the last ABARES Commonwealth fishery status reports, showed that for the first time in many years, no solely managed Commonwealth fishery was subject to overfishing.
“Not only does our sustainably managed, locally caught seafood taste great, but you are also supporting local industry – and who could argue with that!”
Seafood is incredibly versatile and with so many dinner or recipe choices, like beer-battered calamari, grilled flathead or a hot seafood curry, you might struggle to choose just one this Friday!
Whatever your choice though, if it is Australian, you can have confidence that it is from a well-managed, sustainable fishery.
The Marine Stewardship Council is calling for sustainable seafood ‘ambassadors’ to share their sustainable seafood recipes or post photos of their sustainable seafood lunch or dinner choices to social media to share with the rest of the world, just how good Australian seafood is. You can do this by adding to your post #ForTheSea and tagging @LoveOceanLoveFood on Instagram, @MSCinAustralia on Twitter, or@MSCinAustralia on Facebook.
