Participants at the recent Northern Prawn Fishery Industry Pty Ltd Strategic Planning Workshop

Thinking of the future is all in a day’s work for these Northern Prawn fishery stakeholders. They got to take time out from their day jobs recently to attend a strategic planning workshop. This was organised by the Northern Prawn Fishery Industry Pty Ltd, to focus on identifying priorities and objectives for the fishery over the next 5, 10 and 20 years.

There was a wide mix of participants at the work shop including industry, scientists, management and conservation representatives.  All were eager to hear about how the fishery could maximise catch/cost efficiency, use marketing and promotion, reduce bycatch, and maintain a strong and safe workforce.

Across the two days the participants were worked hard by the facilitator and it paid off. They were able to develop some innovative ideas for the Northern Prawn Fishery industry to work cooperatively with Government to reduce costs, take on a more active role in the management of the fishery, and plan for cost-effective investment in research and development.

The outputs of the workshop will lead to a fishery strategic plan, a five-year research plan and review of the Northern Prawn Fishery Bycatch and Discard Workplan.
