Mario Kart first launched in Australia in 1992.
Those following the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) on Facebook will be aware that on Friday, 3 February 2017, AFMA celebrated our 25th birthday!
We thought we would take AFMA News subscribers on a trip down memory lane (for those of us who were alive at the time anyway!) to remember what life was like back in 1992… So put on those slippers, grab your glasses, and rest those aching feet, as we reflect on the way things were 25 years ago.
Flashing back to 1992 in Australia, we were grooving out to Salt-N-Pepa, while Right Said Fred were being too sexy for their shirt in the USA!
TV-wise in Australia, our favourite pyjama-wearing bananas beat out Jemima and Big Ted to score their own TV show, with the premiere on 20 July 1992. Banana smoothie anyone? Still in TV land and Full House was in the top 10 ranked shows in the US. Who would have thought that 25 years later a spin-off would bring the popular series back to life!
In a series of firsts in the sporting world, in the NRL, the Brisbane Broncos took out their very first premiership, while in the AFL the West Coast Eagles took the trophy west, making Queenslanders and Western Australians very happy!
The Barcelona Olympics were held and the world was introduced to a then 19 year old swimmer, Kieran Perkins. It was also the first time that South Africa was allowed to compete in the Olympic Games again for the first time since 1960.
Super Mario Kart hit lounge rooms across Australia and the first SMS was sent on a mobile phone. Remember the days of having to press the number two button three times for the letter ‘c’?
We hope you’ve enjoyed this brief snapshot of 1992 (all on film of course, no digital cameras or smart phones back then!). It’s certainly made us here at AFMA feel nostalgic, and a little bit old!
