2015-sydney-fish-markets-awardsThe Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) congratulates the winners of the Sydney Fish Market Seafood Excellence Awards held last week. For many Australians seafood is part of our culture, with fish and chips at the beach in summer or on a cold winter’s day fond memories for most.  And of course, who can forget, probably one of the most iconic tag line of all advertisements to come out of Oz, ‘Put another prawn on the barbie’.

Held biannually since 1996, the Sydney Fish Market Seafood Excellence Awards showcase the Australian seafood industry, its value to the national economy, its professionalism, and its commitment to supplying some of the finest seafood in the world to local, national and international markets.

AFMA was a proud sponsor of the People’s Choice Award – Best Fish and Chips.  Congratulations to Darron’s Seafood at Wamberal on the New South Wales central coast who took out the award!

Fresh, local seafood can be found in your local fish and chip shop.  One major local supplier is the Commonwealth managed  Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF). Blue-eye trevalla, blue grenadier, flathead, ling and school whiting are some of the tasty fillets to look out for.  Importantly, due to the management measures that are in place in AFMA managed Commonwealth fisheries, like the SESSF, you can confidence that the product you are eating is sustainable.

AFMA works with industry, scientists and other fishery stakeholders to ensure sustainable fisheries so that current and future generations can continue to enjoy healthy Australian seafood.
